Margaret ("Peg") Whitman
The library staff and board were very sad to learn that Peg Whitman passed away September 26. Peg played an essential role in the history of the Wauconda Area Library. She was appointed as Library Trustee in 1996 and after being elected in 1997 served for three full four-year terms. Ever since her appointment to the board in 1996 – during the planning of a new expanded facility – Peg played an important role in the growth and development of the library, always demonstrating her passion for providing outstanding library services for the community. She was always supportive of anything that would result in improving the library for the community. Anyone who knew Peg knows how much she loved this library. Throughout her tenure as Library Trustee, Peg had a special place in her heart for the library staff.
Peg and her husband, Neil Whitman, served on the 1995 Referendum Committee that was instrumental in getting voter approval that enabled a major expansion of the facility. Peg then served as a dedicated Library Trustee from 1996 to 2009. She was an Officer of the Board for many years, including serving as Treasurer for five years and as President in 2001. She chaired or was a member of the Personnel and Salary Committee as well as the Finance Committee throughout her tenure as Library Trustee.
Peg contributed to the successful planning and completion of the award-winning building expansion and remodeling project in 1997, as well as the successful operating tax rate referendum of 2001. As Library Trustee through the early 2000's, Peg shares some responsibility in the library having been named "Library of the Year" in 2005 by the North Suburban Library System, a consortium of 650 libraries in Chicago's north and northwest suburbs. Peg was very proud to have been part of the achievement of this award and was very happy that the hard work of the library's staff was being recognized.
At Peg's last board meeting in 2009, the Library Board adopted a resolution commending her for her years of service and expressing special thanks for "...her public service and for the distinguished and respectful manner in which she performed her duties to benefit the Library District citizens and users of the Wauconda Area Library."
Library trustees cut the ribbon at the library's Grand Opening, September 28, 1997.
