Rooks and Books Chess Club
For Grades 6 through Adult

Whether you’re new to the game or considered a champ, you’re invited to join an afternoon of play.  The Vice President of the Illinois Chess Association will be on hand for instruction in addition to the occasional assistance of a highly rated chess player.  Snacks provided during game play.

Be a part of the “Teen Scene” at your library!  Discuss issues that involve teens and assist in planning library activities.  Being involved in TAB is an impressive addition to your college application.  Join teens like yourself and let the adventure begin!  Pizza and soda served.

Hispanic Heritage Craft Celebration
Tuesday, September 13, 3:30-5 p.m.
Be a part of the library’s observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month!  We’ll create a number of crafts to celebrate during the months of September and October.



American Red Cross Babysitting Certification
Saturday, November 5, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Learn how to be a safe and responsible babysitter. Participation earns you an official Red Cross Babysitter Card. Ages 11 and up. $30 fee is due at time of registration. Limit 10

 


GET REEL! 4th Annual Teen Film Festival
Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
Celebrate Teen Read Week at the Teen Film Festival!  Teen film makers make their debut on the “big screen” in the Lincoln Room and compete for movie making awards.  We’re rolling out the red carpet for an outstanding evening of film and festivity.
This is event is being sponsored by TAB (your Teen Advisory Board!)

Attention Teen Filmmakers! 
Be a part of this year’s film fest!  Have your short film creation shown on the big screen at the library in theater surround-sound!  The DEADLINE for submitting your film is October 3, 2005.  Categories include:  Action/Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Horror, and Music.  Films will be accepted in VHS or DVD format.  Prizes awarded for all submissions.

 


Library After Hours Teen Performance Café
Friday, October 21, 6 – 8 p.m.
Celebrate Teen Read Week at our first ever “Teen Coffeehouse!”  The mike will be open from 6-7:00 p.m. for those who wish to sing, play music or perform poetry.  At 7:00 p.m. the house lights go down for an “unplugged” style acoustic concert for TEENS ONLY.  If you like the music of Dave Matthews, you’re going to enjoy this program.
Note: If you’d like to perform during the open mike session, please let us know at the Adult Reference Desk by Thursday, October 20.  Performances will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

 


Teen Electronic Game Spot
Friday, November 11, 2 – 4 p.m.
School’s out for the day so join the library for DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and other popular video games! Snacks served.

Holiday Book Club Party
Tuesday, December 13, 6- 7:30 p.m. 
Mix, mingle and make merry with teens who love to read!  Book group members and book lovers are invited to share in a festive holiday dinner, book talk and the preparation of a fun project.
Advance registration required – seating is limited so don’t delay!


Read and Win with Abe!
Just for Grades 9-12
Get involved in the Read & Win program.  Prizes are awarded for reading books on the Abraham Lincoln High School Student Book Award list.  Read three books to receive a free Culver’s Ice Cream Cone; six books to receive a Barnes & Noble Gift Card.

 


New Online Database Classes

Need help with research for your homework? Looking up some information that you can trust? Please join us in the Adult Services Department for quick, informative classes on how to use our new online databases. They are all easy-to-use and can be accessed from the library or from your home. Please register at the Adult Services Reference Desk. If classes are full we will schedule more to be sure you get the help you need.
All classes will be held in the Wireless Lab on the lower level and start at 3:30 p.m.
