What is Mango?

MANGO offers a fun, fast, effective, and convenient solution to our community’s growing language learning needs.  MANGO teaches conversational foreign language skills for English speakers AND English as a Second Language (ESL) if your native language is Spanish, Polish, Russian, or any of 12 other languages (see below).  Recently improved, MANGO is fun to use and more effective than ever -- you'll see incredible results after just one lesson!

How does Mango work?

MANGO uses real-life situations and actual conversations to more effectively teach a new language.  You'll not only learn the individual words and phrases, you'll know how they're used in practical situations and conversations.  You'll learn more than grammar, vocabulary, and conjugation — you'll learn how to communicate.

What languages does MANGO cover?

MANGO currently offers 13 complete language courses and 37 basic courses (covering phrases common for travelers) — with more on the way. If English is your native tongue, you have 22 foreign languages from which to choose. If you wish to learn English, there are 15 language interfaces from which to choose.

Grant Funding

This new service was originally funded in 2010 by a grant intended to help increase literacy, promote library services to adult immigrants and other English language learners, and improve communication throughout the community.  The grant program, “The American Dream Starts @ Your Library,” is administered by the American Library Association and funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

The United Partnership for a Better Community has provided half the funding ($1300) for the library’s 2011 subscription renewal of Mango Languages.  Last year, the library received a literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation that covered the entire cost of this service for the first year. This grant project was very successful – 390 users logged in more 420 hours during 1700 sessions of online instruction. This success was due in part to the help of the United Partnership in promoting this service and facilitating communication with other Partnership members, including School District 118 and the Wauconda Police Department.

The United Partnership for A Better Community was formed by a group of dedicated citizens to foster and coordinate partnerships designed to improve the quality of life in Wauconda area communities. For more information, visit www.unitedpartnership.org.
