September is Library Card Sign-Up
Month, a time when we at the Wauconda Area Library
like to remind all district residents that your
library card is the "smartest card" in your
wallet! Our goal is to make your library card the
most valued and most used card you
possess.
Your library card is your ticket to
opportunity. What other card in your
wallet gives you free |
| access to
books, magazines, CD’s,
DVD's, computers, eBooks
and eAudiobooks, MP3 players and
iPods, and other great resources and
programs that can change your life – or just make
it a little more
fun? |
Freebies and
Discounts!
There are more reasons than
ever to get a library card or replace a lost one, or dig
yours out of your wallet! More than 125
participating businesses throughout the library
district will reward you with discounts or freebies
when you present your library card. This offer
lasts throughout the whole month of
September.
Everyone is invited to pick up a list of vendors and their discounts or
freebies at the library or view the list
at www.wauclib.org.
For further information or to learn how to get a library
card, please call the library at
847-526-6225. Better yet, come to the library to
see what’s new and how many ways you can take advantage
of your library card – it may well be the smartest thing
you ever
do! | |

| Web 2.0 -
What is it? |
|

Web 2.0 - What is it?
If you haven't heard the term "Web 2.0", you
will! No, it isn't Spider-man's latest
web-spinning technology. Web 2.0 refers to the
evolution that is changing the way we use the World
Wide Web.
Instead of just
surfing for information, we are now able to interact
with each other on the Web with the use of tools
like web logs (blogs), podcasts,
wikis, RSS feeds,
and video blogs
(vlogs).
Try
it!
Go to http://maps.ask.com, type in
Wauconda, IL in the Start Location box to the right of
the map. Click Go and instantly a map of Wauconda
appears. Left click on the red pushpin and hold
down the mouse button to drag it anywhere on the
map. Instead of opening up a new map, the map
automatically adjusts to your address change.
Welcome to Web 2.0!
Customize
it!
Web 2.0 is about customizing the Web to fit
your needs. You no longer have to rely on what
other people put out there, and it's free!
Create your own radio station at www.pandora.com. Type in an artist or a
favorite song. Pandora will select similar
artists. Vote on each song and build your
station from there!
Create your own search engine at www.rollyo.com. Add all your home
improvement websites to one list and search them all
at once!
Notify your friends and family of upcoming
events with http://upcoming.org. You add the events and make
them available to your friends, family, the world or
just yourself.
Go
beyond your typical news sites with http://www.newsvine.com/.
Read, write or discuss current news. Add
articles from your favorite newspaper or submit your
own articles. Then others can read your
additions and comment on
them.
