Now your library never closes! With our new digital library patrons can browse, check out, and download digital eBooks and eAudiobooks anytime of day from anywhere in the world. Kids of all ages can read and listen to multimedia eBooks. Thanks to a “Creative Use of Libraries” grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, the Wauconda Area Library now provides books in digital format. These books are the digital versions of print books, and include downloadable audio books for listening and eBooks for on-screen reading. EBooks can be used on a variety of devices such as PCs, laptops, and supported PDAs. EAudiobooks can also be listened to on a variety of devices such as PCs, laptops, CD players, and supported MP3 players. These new services are possible because of recent advances in technology and because the library now subscribes to several online services, including NetLibrary, MyMediaMall, and TumbleBooks. To access these services, it is recommended and in some cases required that you have:
Getting started is easy. Just visit the library’s website at www.wauclib.org. The library’s home page will lead you to the service you want, along with instructions. Just click on the special button or graphic titled "eBooks Are Easy -- Audiobooks Are Awesome." When you’re ready, check out your materials by entering your library card and download the digital books to your computer. Once downloaded, you can transfer them to your portable device, or burn the audio books directly to CD. When the lending period is up your digital books are automatically returned — so there are never any late fees! Many of the materials can be read or listened to immediately right from your computer or library workstation. Worried that you aren’t familiar enough with computers or the Internet to take advantage of these new services? Worry no more – once all of the services are in place, we will offer free classes and will publish a user-friendly printed instruction guide. Keep in mind, though, that these services are EASY and AWESOME to use if you follow the online instructions. Digital books are compatible with most home computers and laptops. Download e-Audiobooks (digital versions of traditional audio books on tape or CD) to enjoy on your PC, laptop, or on hundreds of portable WMA/MP3 players. You can also burn e-Audiobooks to CD and listen to them in the car or on any standard CD player. eBooks (digital text based versions of a book) can be read on PCs, laptops, MACs, PDAs, and Smartphones.
In addition to
funding the purchasing of ebooks and digital audiobooks, the grant
will also provide funding for purchasing 10 ebook devices and 10 mp3
players that can be checked out of the library, just as you would
check out a book. These devices will be preloaded with the ebooks
or audiobooks ready for reading or hearing – what could be easier or
more awesome than that! These devices will be available for
checkout soon!
