Ancestry (Library Edition) is a genealogy research tool created for the library market. It gives patrons instant access to a wide range of unique resources for genealogical and historical research. With more than 1.5 billion names in over 4,000 databases, Ancestry Library Edition includes records from the United States census; military records; court, land, and probate records; vital and church records; directories; passenger lists, and more! These collections are continuously expanding, with new content added every business day.

The library now subscribes to
BrainPOP, a web site that features hundreds of educational topics covering English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health, and Technology. Although these are primarily correlated to educational standards for Grades K-8 they can be very useful to anyone looking for a simple explanation of a given topic. Each topic section contains a 2-4 minute animated movie, an interactive quiz, an experiment, a comic strip, a how-to hands on application, a timeline and a printable activity page. This service is available through the library website at most Internet workstations throughout the library.  Use of sound available only in Computer Lab A or B.

CultureGrams is a great place to start for students and travelers wishing to understand different cultures from around the world.  Search country profiles, photos, recipes, customs, history, famous people, folklore and much more.  There are three components to CultureGrams, a World edition, a Kids edition, and a States edition.  

 


Daily Herald (Full-Text Database, 1997 to present)  (for use within the library or remotely)
Looking for local news dating back several years?  This is probably your best source.  Access to these full-text articles is free for Wauconda Area Library patrons within the library or from home.

 

 
Daily Herald Digital Archive (1901-1995) (In-Library Use Only)
Explore an online collection of newspaper articles dating as far back as 1901.  Try different search features, including "Birthday Newspaper" to see what the major headlines were on the day you were born.  Along with major headlines, search for old high school sports scores, wedding announcements, photographs, school news, and even lunch menus!

Health Learning Center  (for use within the library or remotely) 
Generously provided by Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Health Learning Center is a state-of-the-art health information library.  It provides access to reliable consumer health information via the Virtual Library.  Search for information on diseases, conditions, treatment options, etc. by clicking on "Virtual Library."   Free reference help is also available by email or phone.

 

Heritage Quest Online
 (for use within the library or remotely -- requires library card) 
Online resource for census data, family records and local histories. Assembles every extant U.S. federal census, banking and military records, genealogies, local histories, primary source materials, and genealogical and local history serials. An ongoing project (new content is added weekly), Heritage Quest Online will grow to encompass obituaries, Freedman's Bank Records, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Index and additional materials.

Search by company name, geographic area, business type, SIC code, yellow page listing, revenue, location, number of employees or any combination of the above. In addition to address and phone number, each entry includes officer names and titles, corporate affiliation, business type and size of yellow page advertising.

WilsonWeb Online Children's Catalog

WilsonWeb's Online Children's Catalog is a great resource for teachers or librarians serving children in preschool through sixth grade.  It can be used for collection development, readers' advisory and curriculum support.  Identify core collections of literature in various formats, including fiction, non-fiction, picture books, graphic novels, and magazines.
