SUGGESTION BOX

February, 2001

1. You shouldn't charge any money on printing out pages in the computer.

We would love to be able to offer this service for free, along with our many other free services. Unfortunately, the rising cost of paper and ink and our tight budget do not allow us this option. The current fee does not even fully cover our costs. Most area libraries are now charging for this in some manner. To save yourself money, please speak to a librarian for some tips on printing out only what you want. Scrap paper is also freely available to take notes.

2. Your email stuff should go faster and be more high tech.

We are working on addressing the problem of slow computers. We plan on instituting much-needed upgrades in the future as the budget allows. Also, keep in mind the library doesn't provide email services, and often it is the email service which you subscribe to which is experiencing slowdowns due to high-use periods or technical problems. These are problems we have no control over.

3. You shouldn't charge any money for ridiculous overdue fines for books.

We appreciate your comments, but if you check around at other libraries, you will find that most libraries charge at least .10 a day overdue fine. Actually, we were one of the only ones that only charged a nickel a day until only about a month ago, when we finally raised our fines.

4. The curb pulling into the library is awful. It needs to be smaller or smoother.

We are aware of this problem, and we are hoping that with the Main Street restoration project, the problem will be taken care of.

5. You have private rooms for 5th graders and 18 years and up, but the high schoolers don't have anything. We need these rooms because of reports!

Thank you for letting us know about your interest in reserving computer time for students in grades 6-12. Last year, we tried offering a computer that could be reserved by students in grades 6-12 after school and on weekends during the school year. At that time there was very little interest, however, we would be happy to make this service available once again. If you are interested, please call the Reference Desk as little as one hour in advance to reserve the computer. Reservations are for one hour and start on the hour. We hope this will assist you in your report writing.

6. Save resources. Eliminate "entertainment" videos and DVDs. Keep only educational, cultural, documentary. Providing "Die Hard With a Vengeance" should not be a library function. Same should be left to the private sector.

Entertainment videos and DVD's are the library's most popular, most checked out items. Although most of these videos are "Two Thumbs Up" or "4-Star," we also try to provide the most popular, such as the Die Hard series with Bruce Willis. This service is typical of most public libraries. This service is also our single most important promotional device -- these videos often bring many first-time library users, and then once here they see how much else we offer. Please also keep in mind that we provide more than 2,100 instructional videos, as well.

7. Please get "Bone Collector" in VHS.

This video has been ordered.

8. (via web site) Your program page is not current. It still lists programs from Summer 2000.

Thank you. Some sections of our website need updating and this is in process. Please keep in mind that because of budgetary constraints, the library's Technology Coordinator position is now vacant and will remain vacant. Basic tasks are being done as other staff have time.

9. Run a virus check on floppy disks that are returned. (i.e. computer learning materials)

Unfortunately, we are not set up to do this. It is highly recommended that virus protection software be installed on all home computers and business computers.
