SUGGESTION BOX

January, 2001

1. I think you should get a subscription to the skateboarding magazine Box and Daily Bread.

Thank you for showing your interest in our periodicals collection. Due to budget constraints, we are currently not adding any new magazines to our collection at this time. We will take your request into consideration, however, as the situation changes.

2. I think you should let us have drinks down here.

Since the library does not have any dining facilities, it would be best if you enjoyed your after-school snack or beverage before coming here.

3. (via web site) I'm concerned that the Library collects food, etc. for the "Wauconda-Island Lake Food Pantry" which apparently is not a registered charitable organization in the state of Illinois (per Attorney General). If you have information as to the state register number for the Food Pantry, please provide for the public interest.

Thank you for asking about the Food Pantry. We have been helping local families in need for approximately 15 years and are very proud to be a part of the annual food drive. The Food Pantry is a registered charitable organization (the state register number cannot be given out), and if you have any further questions, you are welcome to contact Yolanda Segovia at the Wauconda Township office 526-2631. KN

4. I would like to see Library hours expanded especially for my high school student. You're closed on Friday nights and late Sundays when library research could really be a service. The library hours are extremely inconvenient for students.

Because of the increased costs of doing business and slow growth in revenue, the library must consider cutting hours rather than increasing them. The current hours are designed to accommodate most residents most of the time -- these hours are very typical of other libraries in the area. We would like to expand library hours someday. The hours you suggest will be the first to be considered.

5. The three-day holding period for "special ordered" books is too short.

Because of cutbacks in purchasing, we order fewer copies of popular books. Therefore, we cannot afford to let what books we have go idle on a holding shelf. We do not think it unreasonable to expect a patron to come pick up their materials within three days of notification. This is a typical holding period. If you ever need a day or two extra, please give us a call -- we are not inflexible.

6. I was thinking that you could have a new rule: "When you are done with the toys then you should put them back".

It is our hope that everyone who plays with the toys and puzzles in the Children’s Department will put these items away when they are done using them. However, it is hard to enforce this "rule" with toddlers – so we depend on their parents or older siblings to help out!

7. Too warm inside. Very uncomfortable. You should try to conserve energy.

We try very hard to conserve energy. In any building of this size it is sometimes difficult adjust to outdoor temperature fluctuations. We apologize for any discomfort you might feel. Our air system, however, is designed to make optimal use of natural gas and electricity!

8. You need color copy machines.

These machines are costly. Because of recent financial cutbacks, the library will be eliminating one of its two black and white copiers -- we will not be able to consider a color copier until some time in the future.

9. I think you should fix or replace "Making Faces" by Norman Messenger in the Children's Department.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will examine the book as soon as it is returned.

10. Your web site for teens has almost nothing on it. The newsletter has only one thing on it. And what happens when somebody doesn't like poetry?

We look forward to revamping and expanding our YA web site in the future. The YA Advisory Boards have assisted in compiling additional outstanding links, and you are welcome to contribute suggestions to these groups at any time. Due to current staffing conditions, we have been unable to implement their suggestions as quickly as we'd like, but we hope to do so soon.
