SUGGESTION BOX

April, 2003

1. The Patron Appreciation Day was very nice.  I think the Storytime (Toddler Time) is wonderful.  My children have enjoyed it for the past several years.  What a great way to get the little ones interested in reading!

We appreciate your kind sentiments!  They affirm our belief that early literacy exposure is crucial for children to become competent readers and life-long learners.

2.  The library should obtain a DVD cleaner/scratch remover.  We have repeatedly checked out very damaged DVDs, still not working even after they were “cleaned”.

We plan to purchase a special machine which will restore CD’s and DVD’s to some extent.  Until now, this machine has been cost-prohibitive.  However, these materials are vulnerable to irreparable damage, and we ask that all patrons who use these materials take care not to scratch them.

3.  Your DVDs are bad!  Some of them skid and I don’t think it’s my DVD player.

Please let us know if you have a problem with a particular DVD – we will take it off the shelf until it is repaired or replaced.

4. The Patron Appreciation reception was a great idea!  Great food, great company, great staff (as usual).  Thank you.

We are glad that you enjoyed ‘your’ celebration and we plan to celebrate our wonderful patrons annually during National Library Week.

5.  What an excellent parent/teacher resource section/selection you have!  I find too many books that I want to check out as a homeschool mom!  Thank you – keep stocking it.

Thanks for the compliment!  We are happy to hear that you are finding the Parent/Teacher collection useful in your home school.  We plan to expand this collection during the coming fiscal year, so keep an eye on the “New Books” range in the Children’s department (and bring a sturdy tote bag with you!)

6.  It is inconvenient to be unable to put new DVDs on hold.  The policy should be consistent across the board.  If you allow children’s DVDs, new books, etc. to be place on hold, what is the reasoning behind this policy for adult DVDs?

The demand for new entertainment DVD’s is higher than for any other item type, and the reserve process greatly slows down the availability of an item.  Consequently, we do not allow holds for new videos, DVD’s, or Most Wanted items of any type, including books and CD’s.  Please be aware that we are ordering more copies of the most popular titles (i.e., 8 copies of the latest Harry Potter video).

7.  My son is in Storytime and loves it, but I’ve noticed when leaving that there are Moms with smaller children who never clean up their mess.  I have picked up once or twice, but maybe a bigger sign would be a good idea.  I love this library!

Keeping the Children’s department in good order is a daily challenge!  We appreciate the efforts of the majority of our patrons who either pick up after themselves or encourage their children to put away items that they have used.  We hope that their responsible role modeling will impact (more effectively than our gentle signage) those who currently leave their mess behind.

8.  You have the best staff ever; they’re so nice and friendly.  Thank you!

Thank you – we appreciate your kindness and hope you visit the library often!

9.  Would it be possible to have a computer & coffee setup for adults only?  One computer in a kind of out-of-the-way location maybe?  (A sort of cyber café)  No food, just plain coffee while you work on the computer.

We are considering this concept – we plan to provide such a service in one way or another – we just have to hash out the details.  We think it’s a great idea!

10.  Please acquire: “Seabiscuit” on CD, Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan movies, “Barefoot in the Park”, more foreign films on DVD, “Man of the House”, t.A.T.u. CD

These items have been purchased or acquired through Interlibrary Loan.

11.  The book of the month club for grades 1-3 is great.  You have done a wonderful job.  My daughter has learned a lot and is an enthusiastic reader.

We are happy to hear that your child has enjoyed the “Happy Birthday, Dear Author” club!  We will be offering a similar program this summer entitled, “Celebrity Celebrations.”  Details will be available in the upcoming issue of the library’s newsletter and posted on the library’s web site by late May!

12.  More (not Mystery) books on CD.  Keep them coming!

We’ll do our best – thank you for checking them out!

13.  Have a “thought for the week” posted for all to see.  Examples: “A smile is a curve that can straighten out a lot of things”, “A mind once expanded seldom returns to its original shape”!

We’ll consider this – thank you for the suggestion.
