SUGGESTION BOX

January, 2003

1. I love the “If you like so & so try so & so” cards.  What a great idea!

Thanks, we are so glad that you enjoy them.

2.  Two things I loved about the Palatine Library I’d love to see here.  (I moved here in 2000).  1. They had all their paperbacks in one place on carousels – not just romances.  It was wonderful when going on a trip.  2. They also had a book exchange cart.  You could take one or two and bring some in another time.  Thanks!

We’ll consider these.  Thanks!

3.  Please stop the people from parking in front of the stairs (a no parking zone).  My daughter is on crutches and it is difficult for her to get into this area.

We will improve signage in the spring/summer and work with the police to enforce this.  To some extent, though, we are dependent on the courtesy of our patrons.

4.  Please put all the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” books together.  It’s too hard to look everywhere to find one.  Also, get more Matt Damon and Ben Affleck biographies.

We’ll consider this.  Thanks.

5. Please buy: “EBay for Dummies”, Pulsepounders videos, “Scooby-Doo”, “Tremors”, Edward Scissorhands”, O-Town CDs,  “School Ties”, “Rabbit-Proof Fence”, “The Bread, My Sweet” and “Clueless”.

The books and movies on this list that are available for purchase have been ordered.

6.  Please increase budget for book buying; decrease budget for non-educational, entertainment videos.  Libraries are to encourage reading!

This library goes to great lengths to encourage reading -- our book budget and programming budget reflect this.  We also provide many types of materials for which there is public demand, including entertainment videos.  In fact, our video and DVD collections have the highest demand of all.

7.  We would like more books on CD.  You have a good amount on tape but most cars (new) now come with CD players and not tape players.

In purchasing audio books, those in CD format take precedence over those in cassette format.  Please check out the “New Audio Book” collection.  We recently separated books on CD from books on cassette in order to make it easier for you to find the format you want.  If there’s something you’re looking for that we do not have, please stop by the Adult Reference Desk to make a suggestion.

8.  It would be nice if one computer in the Children’s Department was dedicated to searching for library books (i.e. no games).   At busy hours, all the computers are used for games and my school age son often has to go upstairs to look up book titles for reports, etc.

As we have only six computers in the public area of the Children’s department, it is crucial that they all have multiple software applications.  If your son visits the library and finds all computers in use, please advise him to ask the Children’s librarian for assistance.  If he prefers to seek information himself, he can always request to use one of the computer labs in the Children’s department.  We will consider adding a dedicated workstation in the future.

9.  I would just like to say your staff is great!

THANK YOU!

10.  Movie night at the library is a great idea!  Thanks for all the great movie picks you’ve made so far.

We’re happy to hear that you’re enjoying this fun offering at the library.  Keep watching for more great films in the weeks and months to come!

11.  When the kids sign out for crayons I think it’s a bad idea to have the phone number for anyone to see.

We request name and telephone information to encourage responsibility for the use of crayons.  Before we did so, children often scribbled on the counter, walls and furniture of the Children’s department.

12.  Please consider placing “The Lord of the Rings” DVD upstairs since it is rated PG-13 and although it is a wonderful film, it is inappropriate for the younger set who usually use this floor of the library.

We have a great many children in intermediate grades who request this video. While the “Fellowship of the Ring” might not be appropriate for very young children, the Children’s department serves children through fifth grade.  Ultimately, it is the responsibility of parents and caregivers to determine the appropriateness of any library resource for their own family.

13.  I think you guys should get a couple more copies of the “Dear America” diary where they are in a dust storm.

In keeping with our collection development guidelines, we currently purchase only one copy of the “Dear America” titles. If the book that you would like is checked out, the Children’s librarian will be happy to place a reserve for you.
