SUGGESTION BOX

March, 2000

1. "Drivers Ed 1998" is a very educational game. Is it possible if you guys can get the updated version, "Drivers Ed 2000"?

The most current version of Drivers Ed is the 1999 version. Although we do only have the 1998 version, there were no significant improvements between the 1998 and 1999 versions. When Drivers Ed 2000 is released we will consider purchasing it.

2. The videos should be available to people as soon as they are checked in. A large number are taken directly from the carts and this saves taxpayers money because we (the taxpayers) have to pay the wages for shelvers.

The video cart will generally be available for browsing videos which have been checked in but not yet shelved. We know that this has been a popular way for patrons to get videos fast and apologize for the temporary inconvenience. We will put a sign on this cart explaining its purpose. Thank you!

3. I will go to great lengths to understand who is responsible for, and what procedures are performed in selecting this library's video collection. An abundance of depressing and near-pornographic items clutter your shelves. How about some real comedy classics we can share with our children? Where are Martin and Lewis? How about Abbott and Costello? For the love of God, what happened to the Three Stooges? Many of us have had it up to our necks with Disney, and would like to share good-natured laughs without having to worry about nudity and foul language.

This library offers one of the finest selections of videos of any public library in the area. Much care has been taken in the selection of videos over the years. We try to accommodate a broad variety of tastes while at the same time maintaining a high level of quality -- most of the videos are "two thumbs up" or the equivalent. You are welcome to your opinion. In fact, your point regarding the need for more comedy classics is well taken and we will make some additions in this area. Thank you!

4. The new reference librarian is great. She's a keeper.

Thanks. We are pleased to have her on our staff.

5. The bunny display is fabulous!

Thank you. We are always looking for great displays for our case. A very happy Spring to you!

6. It is so stupid now that we have to pay for paper! At least reduce the price. Ten cents a page is way too much!

Believe it or not, even ten cents does not cover the cost of materials, supplies, and repairs needed to produce an average printout off the Internet. This fee is typical among the other libraries in this area, and is now required purely for the purpose of recovering some of our costs. We wish to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation!

7. We shouldn't have to pay for the paper we use to print. If anything, just limit the number of papers that can be printed. It's kind of expensive.

Please see the explanation above.

8. The kids across the room are talking. The library should understand that I need to study.

If you find the noise level distracting, please ask the librarian at the Reference Desk to intervene.

9. Today a lady upstairs was rude to me. I put some money in the downstairs copier, then I tried to get it back and it wouldn't give me it back. I went to the lady at the desk upstairs and she was kind of refusing to give my money back. She kept going over it like I was some kind of a child. I really didn't appreciate that. I mean, a little smile once in a while doesn't hurt.

We apologize if you had an unpleasant experience in the library. Good customer service is one of our trademarks and we certainly want to keep that image! We generally have a very friendly and helpful library staff.

10. You have nice and willing-to-help employees.

Thank you!

11. The library should put in food.

Thanks for your suggestion. We will consider allowing certain types of refreshments in the future.

12. Check the suggestions box more often.

We check the Suggestion Box each month and respond each month. All suggestions are reviewed by the Library's Management Team, the Library Director, and the Board of Library Trustees. Responses are available on the library's web site and in the information display case across from the New Books.

13. Get bigger pencils.

The pencils we provide are the most economical way of providing this service. Larger pencils are cost prohibitive.

14. My kids and I really enjoyed the Family Reading Club. Thanks for the great program!

Thanks for your kind comments! We hope your family will enjoy the summer reading club which will begin on June 12th.

15. Why do you have to pay ten cents for the computers? It's dumb.

Please see our response to Suggestion # 6.

16. I believe that is entirely too loud in the library and patrons don't seem to understand that others seek a quiet place to read when they come here. Very often, children are running around and yelling at a level which could disturb others. Even youngsters who come downstairs to study must contend with this downstairs. Perhaps you could post large posters which ask for Quiet Please!

If the noise level is distracting, please ask the librarian at the Reference Desk (both Adult and Children’s) to intervene. We certainly want our patrons to be able to read and study in a comfortable environment. However, please keep in mind that the Children’s Department serves the needs of children from birth through age 12 – and that small children often explore and experience the library in a robust manner.

17. Get erasers.

If you forget to bring an eraser, you are welcome to borrow one from any of the public service desks.

18. Get a better way for people to find specific books. The computers upstairs are too confusing. I'm a twelve year old computer geek and I still can't get it.

Please ask one of the librarians at the Reference Desk for assistance. We will be happy to lead you through the process of using the online catalog. Once you understand it, you'll probably enjoy using it!
