SUGGESTION BOX

April, 2000

1. Get more new CDs.

A large order will be placed at the end of May -- in the mean time, please check out the Gold Star and Most Wanted sections -- there are a few new ones added weekly.

2. You had a game day awhile back; I thought it was a good idea. I hope another one will be planned.

We will definitely offer another game day either in the summer or the fall.

3. We really need books on social scientists and their jobs. It's really difficult to do research without a reliable source!

We have several reference sources that deal with many occupations. There is also some very useful information on the Internet. If you need help locating this information please see a reference librarian.

4. Love the keychain card. I am always losing my card, so this is awesome. Thanks.

Glad you like it and use it often – we have had many happy keytag-user patrons! KN

5. Thank you for fixing the new fiction. It is great and easy to see. Thank you again!

Glad you like the arrangement. Thanks for the feedback.

6. Three Stooges movies; Jerry Lewis!

Ordered -- thanks!

7. The stairs and slope of the main entrance are too challenging at times. Patrons should be able to freely access the ground level without pounding on the door. At least put in a bell to get the employees' attention to let in those who need this.

There is already a bell at the back door. This door leads to the receiving room and staff offices. In order to get to the upper level of the library from this door, the distance is greater and less convenient for the patron than if s/he enters through the front. There are many times throughout the day when the staff are not in their offices and would not be able to respond to the door bell, resulting in a wasted effort for the person trying to use that entrance. We tried to provide this service during the first months that we were in the building and learned that it requires more effort for the patron than using the front entrance. Since then, we have installed two additional automatic door openers in order to make the front entrance even more accommodating to everyone.

8. If the library is going to charge for ordering interlibrary "pamphlets" I request : 1) better medical reference material here 2) subscribe to an internet site patrons can access. The medical literature now here is poor in quantity and quality.

Because of the high cost of medical reference materials, the library must utilize the excellent interlibrary loan system which has been established and works so well. The cost of interlibrary loan can be high, depending on the lender. In the case of repeated multiple requests from a single patron, the library cannot afford to absorb all costs. There is a wealth of information available on the Internet, much of which is free and available to the public. We do plan to improve our very basic core collection of medical reference resources. An expensive, sophisticated collection of medical resources would be an inappropriate use of the library's limited funding. For finding article citations, try http://www.healthgate.com/medline/search-medline.shtml or ask a librarian for help.

9. The driveway entering the library from Main Street has had a huge bump for years (curb type bump). Could it be smoothed or fixed? Graded?

The Village of Wauconda is responsible for this curb. Next summer the village plans to repave and reconfigure this portion of Main Street. The library has made it clear that the bump is a problem we would like solved. Please keep in mind that the curb was originally designed to control drainage. If you wish to avoid the bump, simply use the northern entrance to the High School and then turn into the library parking lot from the south -- there is no bump at all!!

10. Maybe you guys should consider vending machines or something. We get kinda hungry after studying for a while.

We will consider this soon.

11. Computer Room B blocks Yahoo! e-mail and since the library allows Yahoo! e-mail, please get it fixed.

We have corrected the problem in lab B that was blocking certain types of cookies that Yahoo and other web mail sites use. Unfortunately, some patrons change the options within Internet Explorer thereby causing these types of problems. We do our best to fix these problems as they occur, but given the limitations of Internet Explorer, they may happen repeatedly. Please let us know if the problem happens again and we will attend to it.

12. How come you're not getting any new movies in video? I see the DVD shelf is grown, but I come for the videos. For every DVD you buy, you should get a video too!

We will always attempt to purchase both formats. Please understand that many movies are released in DVD format before they are available to use in VHS format in the "pre-viewed" market. We have not stopped purchasing VHS videos at all. Sorry for the delay -- we are at the mercy of the video stores!

13. You should get these movies: I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, The Beautician and the Beast, Milk Money, The Presidio, Double Jeopardy, Volcano, Backdraft, Laura, The Man With One Red Shoe, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Thanks for your suggestions -- we'll put in an order for most of these.

14. Please purchase a collection (small) of e-books, which are devices you can use like a book. These have the capacity to store several books by a particular author. The only problem, they cost about $200.00 apiece.

We plan to purchase at least one ebook very soon! Stay tuned!

15. Library charge cards, like you pay for how much you want to pay for and just charge to that much.

We plan to provide debit cards in the future. The initial cost to the library is cost-prohibitive, though, so we must wait a year or two until we can afford it.

16. I would like to thank the Children's Department for hosting this morning's wonderful Bunny Brunch. My daughter and her friends loved the food, decorations, and visit with the bunny, and are now playing with the bunny puppets they created. At the time of our visit, we would estimate that there were 100+ children in the department, yet the program was well organized and the staff was in control throughout the morning. Thanks again for hosting such wonderful programs!

Thank you! We enjoyed it, too!

17. My family has been looking forward to the baby geese. Each year, no "kids". Hope they make it this year. We saw the eggs.

Keep your fingers crossed! We've had little ones in the past!

18. I really like all the help.

We try to be helpful. Thank you for letting us know when we are succeeding!

19. There should be chairs where you/parents can sit and view the beautiful, relaxing, expensive fish tank. After working all day, it would be quite a treat knowing you're being constructive in two ways: good conditioning for your child, experiencing the library where they have the endless ability to learn and explore; while reading (to your child or self) or just relaxing while viewing the tranquil fish, and letting the stresses of the day roll away. A mirror across from the fish tank (between the stairs and elevator) would allow for your staff to view it and even others.

We're glad you like the aquarium! Perhaps someday we will add a second aquarium in an area where there is seating. As for the existing one, it is designed primarily to be viewed in passing. Its primary purpose is to attract children to the department, and it seems to serve this purpose well.

20. I've recently moved back into Wauconda and the library is outstanding. Keep up the great work. Thank you.

We’re glad your library experience was a pleasant one, and we’re glad to have you back in the area!
