SUGGESTION BOX

December, 2005

1.  Please subscribe to “The Economist”.  If you need to unsubscribe another magazine, please eliminate “The Sporting News”—it’s terrible!

We will look into the addition of “The Economist.”  We would appreciate knowing your specific complaints about “The Sporting News” as it has a following of readers here.

2.  Please purchase: DVDs Victory at Sea, Deadwood, Foul Play, Gilmore Girls, Awakenings; books by Nicole Jordan, First Day of Winter by Denis Fleming, Sons of Ireland, Redwall series; CD Generations by Journey.

These are being considered for purchase.  Thanks for the suggestions!

3. I was pleased the other day when I received a phone call – actually it was for my husband – from the Library telling me that a product he had ordered was in the Library.  Not even thinking, I said, “What did he order?” and the young lady said, “I can’t tell you.”  I didn’t think anything of it until later when I remembered her words – she could not tell me what he ordered.  I respect the privacy that you afford your library card holders.  It really is no one’s business what he ordered.  In these days when our personal freedoms are getting more and more limited, and privacy seems to be a thing of the past, I appreciate the Library’s policy on privacy.  Thank you.

Thank you for the positive comments regarding your personal confidentiality issue.  So often patrons have trouble understanding some of the things we do to protect the privacy of our patrons.  We thank you and all of the other patrons who know and understand that this can be a very sensitive subject.

4.  Two years ago, the Chicago issue on “Top Doctors” was “lost” immediately after being checked out.  As the most desirable issue, please take steps so the next issue is available for all, as you never replaced the prior issue.

Your comment is appreciated.  We will now keep this special annual January 2006 issue about “Top Doctors” at the Adult Services Reference Desk as a Reference Only copy where it will join other special issues such as Crain’s Chicago Business 2006 Book of Lists.  Just so you know, we subscribe to Consumer’s Checkbook, which also offers peer reviewed ratings of doctors in the Chicago metropolitan area. This is kept at the Adult Services Reference Desk as well.

5.  Get more computers.

Several steps are being taken to improve access to the library’s public computer workstations.  Four additional laptop computers will soon be available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.  We will soon install a user-friendly PC access and session management system which will ensure that time limits and usage restrictions are accommodated.

6.  Get an Internet that loads the page fully and faster.

Our experience is such that we do not notice a problem with the speed of the library’s Internet server.  However, the web-based library catalog server is a bit slow and correction of this problem is in process.
