SUGGESTION BOX

August, 2005

1. Would it be possible for the library to have the Printmaster graphics program on the patron accessible computers?  It’s a better program that Microsoft which is on the computers now.

Yes – we’ll install it on several workstations.

2.  Please purchase: movies: Grosse Pointe Blank, Downfall, more horror DVDs; music: Linkin Park, Further Seems Forever, Mae, Thousand Foot Krutch; magazine: Sync.

These are being considered for purchase.  Thanks for the suggestions!

3. Snack area for breaks with coffee, vending, hot chocolate, pop, etc. Good for students and adults and raising funds.

We’re considering this.  For the time being, though, you are welcome to bring beverages into the library, as long as they are tightly covered.

4.  I would like to comment on the lack of handicapped parking available.  Even the grocery store has more parking than the library.  There should be more handicapped parking available closer to the library.

The library actually provides more handicapped parking spaces than required.  We added one space three years ago, making a total of five spaces.  Only four are required.  We continue to monitor the situation, though.  We will add another space as necessary.

5.  Carl Gates was wonderful.  Please have him return.

We are glad you appreciated this program.  Mr. Gates speaks at many public libraries throughout the Chicago area.  We will look into a return engagement.

6.  Regarding facts of life books housed in the children’s department.  I suggest that we can code the library cards to show that the child is not of age based on the school system or county system, similar to driver’s licenses.

Please be more specific with your suggestion – we’re not sure what you mean.

7.  My husband and I are patrons of the library and have enjoyed some of the many wonderful programs the library offers.  As Seniors most of our social and recreation activity is centered around the community.  One of the highlights of the year for us is the Cubs baseball game.  We hope you will continue to sponsor this event.  Also, thanks to the Board and Staff for making the Wauconda Library the wonderful library it is.

Thank you for expressing your appreciation – this is one of our most popular events each year!

8.  I am considered handicapped (respiratory problems).  I have trouble walking far distances and feel the handicapped spots are hard to get from the main entrance.  The ramp is on an incline for wheelchairs and it feels like a lot of stairs if you have trouble walking either due to respiratory problems or a walking disability.  Are there any other options for people with disabilities?  Is it just me or has anyone else have problems?  Is there any other way to enter the building?

Unfortunately, there is no good alternative for a ground-level front entrance, short of demolishing the existing stairway and completely re-structuring the front entrance.

The staff entrance in the rear of the building is an option, but we suggest that you call ahead (847-526-6225) to ensure that someone will be able to open the door for you.  This entrance will lead you into the staff work area.  The staff area leads to the Children’s area on the lower floor.  From there, you can use the elevator to get upstairs to the Adult Services area.

Please also keep in mind that the library will deliver materials to patrons who are unable to come to the library for physical reasons.  Simply give us a call and we’ll set up a delivery to your home.

9.  Get a Play Place and video games, less books and more movies.

Not sure what you mean by Play Place and video games.  We are, in fact, considering adding educational video games to the collection.  As for “less books”, we cannot accommodate this request at this time.  While we are already actually adding more books to the collection, we’re also adding more movies.

10.  Would the Children’s Department please purchase books and videos on how to learn Akido?

We will look into purchasing these resources. Thanks for the recommendation!

11.  As a homeschool mother of four, I so appreciate the services and programs provided by our library and take advantage of as many as we can. My oldest daughter is entering her 6th grade year now and we’re discovering that a lot of programs and activities that we enjoyed together in the Children’s Dept. are no longer offered to her grade level.  I do realize that there has to be some sort of age range for programs but may I suggest either bumping it up a year or two (from5th to 6th or 7th) or at least making it optional on some activities where siblings prefer to stay together.  Some children may be anxious to be “upstairs” in the YA Dept., on their own, but in our particular case, my daughter prefers to stay with her siblings.  Thank you for your consideration of the issue.

We understand your concern, and want you to understand that sixth graders are welcome in the Children’s Department – especially if they are not yet comfortable yet in Adult Services or if they wish to remain with their younger siblings.  As for attending Children’s programs, we are flexible, and will make exceptions to the rule – please just let us know when this situation arises – we want all sixth graders to enjoy themselves at the library!
