SUGGESTION BOX

June, 2003

1. I want to thank you for such a “kid friendly” environment, for keeping it so nice and clean; also, after “shushing” my boys at other local kid-department libraries, I’ve really come to appreciate and admire that our Wauconda library offers so much!  The librarians are knowledgeable, helpful, and always courteous too.

Thanks for your kind comments!

2.  While visiting another nearby library I noticed the restrooms are locked and you need a key at the desk with a sign in/out sheet.  I like this security system as I have daughters who spend a lot of time here.

We will give this some thought.

3.  I would like to see more large print books, especially the bestsellers.  Everyone can read them but not everyone can read small print.

We will purchase more copies of large print bestsellers.

4. Great web site.  Congrats.

Thank you!  We have noticed that usage of our web site is more than twice what it was a year ago.

5.  Drop-In Craft stated in flyer 9:30-8:30 p.m.  My son and I came in at 7:15 p.m. and you were out of crafts.  Adults were doing the crafts at tables.  When we work all day, and this is our only time to come, it is hard to believe that you “ran out” and adults are doing the crafts.  I understand you ordered 178, but why was this in the children’s column?  My son was in tears.

We regret that our supply of crafts ran out before your son visited the library on drop-in craft day.  It is difficult to estimate how many kits to order, as attendance varies greatly throughout the summer.  Usually we order more than we think we will ever distribute, but unfortunately it is not an exact science.  The adults that you observed were assisting children (who sometimes explore the department while their caregivers complete the craft.)  We will try to have enough kits for the remaining craft days, but you may want to call the Children’s Reference Desk to check availability before coming to the library next time.  We do not want you or him to be disappointed ever again!

6.  Remove computer firewall from one of the Lab computers to allow viewing of library inventory of CDs.  For example, allowing learning more about computers from a tutorial CD such as keyboard/typing.

This is in the works.  This capability will exist before September.

7.  Install credit card printers and thus avoid paper waste and theft of printed copies.  By so doing, computer room will cease to be an after school gathering place for unauthorized chat room use, etc.

We plan to install a debit card system this summer in an effort to make better use of the library’s resources and to improve accessibility for the public.  The use of chat rooms is not allowed – please let the Reference Desk staff know if others in the room are being inconsiderate.

8.  (via web site)  Have an outdoor movie on Friday or Saturday night.  Use your new DVD projector and sound system.  You could show them behind the library, or close off a parking lot and show them there.  Family movies like “Wizard of Oz”, or “Grease”, where people dress up would be a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, we are not equipped or staffed to show outdoor movies.  Please come to our indoor movies – you won’t have to put up with the mosquitoes!

9.  Please acquire: New Buddy Guy blues CD, books in the Mates, Dates series, Jimmy Fallon CD, Hercules TV series, Star Trek, Xena, Hartari!, Summer of Fear DVDs.

These items have been Interlibrary Loaned or purchased.

10.  Your Book Journals are so helpful and greatly appreciated.  Keep up the helpful ideas.

Thank you – we’re glad you find them useful.

11.  We should get to help put the books on the shelves, and you should also get more bean bag chairs.

We are happy to learn that you enjoy our comfy bean bag chairs!  We plan to add a few more later this year.  While your offer to help shelve books is greatly appreciated, we find that that responsibility is best handled by our trained staff.  There are thousands of items that need to be shelved each week in our busy library, far too many for volunteers to handle!

12.  Stay open on Sundays in the summer!

We will seriously consider this next summer. Most libraries in the area, however, do not stay open on Sundays during the summer, because of low use.

13.  We should get to help you with the books and movies.

We are always interested in your suggestions – simply tell us what you would like us to purchase – we usually buy what our patrons suggest.  If we don’t buy it, we’ll try to get it for you through interlibrary loan.

14.  I was very pleased to see the meticulous care/cleanliness to the bathroom by the Children’s Department.  Thank you!

Thank you – we do our best to make a good impression!

15.  How about a CD player for the computer lab upstairs?  Too noisy downstairs!

Okay – thanks for the suggestion!

16.  (via web site)  I would like to suggest that the library use its funds toward buying more video games for the teen community.  These games should be for Playstation 2 video game consoles.  Some teens want to play video games but either don’t have the money to buy a video game of their own or to rent a game for themselves.  Renting video games is becoming quite costly these days and not very convenient for people.

Public libraries generally do not invest in arcade-style video games, yet.  We will consider this possibility from time to time.  For the time being, we can help direct you to solutions through our video game magazines and the Internet.

17.  I think you guys are doing great, although you can try to have more system games for Playstation etc.

Thank you.

18.  My suggestions are to have cooler CDs, like: Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, and much cooler CDS!

We will soon purchase many new CD’s in the Alternative category.  Stay tuned!
